Covid, Cutthroat, and Wind.

At swim practice Tuesday the girls learned someone on their team tested positive for Covid.  Effectively ending their season.  They were crushed.  Same for the football team but not sure how long that season is since they started late.  The girls are required to quarantine for 14 days.  That doesn't seem hard until you are in it.  So far lots of baking has happened!  Not sure what I will look like on the backside of 14 days, ha!

I was scheduled to have Thursday through Sunday off, MEA weekend.  I am not required to quarantine but figure it's prudent to do so at least for a bit.  Thus the guys at work told me to stay home Wednesday too.  I still am able to do a bunch of work from home on the computer and such.  Mostly ordering and getting ready for another predicted crazy summer of low inventory and high demand.

Wednesday was a windy day.  Hell it's been windy for a week or more, but more so on Wednesday.  Afternoon I headed out for a short spin on the mountain bike: River Bluffs, Plum Creek, Race Track, and the North Loop.  While at the North Loop I heard the wind picking up as the trees were creaking and cracking.  I live only a mile away from the Loop.  Half of which was into the wind.  Shit that was hard!  Reports had us having gusts up to 54mph!

Thursday the temperatures dropped.  The morning had a feels like temp of 22 degrees.  I'm ok with the temp but the damn wind was already 13 mph out of the NW.  I went back and forth all morning if I should ride or not.  Finally a bit past 10 I headed out.  Mostly because I got new tires (29x2.25) on the Cutthroat and I wanted to try them out.  Big tires and strong winds provided for a slow slog the first half of the ride.  The wind was more West than NW so at 450th street I mashed my pedals into the wind straight West.

Several times early on I decided it would be short ride.  But since I had the new, bigger tires on I had to at least get on some gravel.  The gravel out this way takes me about 1.5 hours to get to.  The further I got the better I felt and more accustomed to the wind I got.  Speaking of wind it was now around 20mph.  Ugh.

The sweet reward for battling the wind was the return trip.  Many times I had my gears maxed (40x10).  I sure cursed the wind several times on the way out but praised it on the return. I ended up on the Wobegon Trail for part of the return trip for a direct tailwind...zoom.

The Ride.

A bit more of the same is going on this morning.  More strong winds out of the West with some scattered rain.  So more procrastinating a ride.  More coffee and couch time will help me decide what to do!
