Both Saturday and Sunday I waiting till the sun was up before heading out. Both mornings were in the teens below zero, warming to single digits below zero. In the sun and out of the wind I was warm, almost too warm. But if I got caught in the wind, I felt it's bite.
Saturday I decided to explore the Mississippi River as it hasn't been this frozen in many years. I got on the river by the South fire station. The river was great! Mostly fast as it hasn't always been frozen so there wasn't much snow on it. The older ice was snow covered, making it more challenging.
Love the sun!
I didn't make it as far as I wanted as the ice started to deteriorate more than I was comfortable with. I was hoping to make it to the creek but no go. I turned around and bopped around on the River Bluff trails before heading back to the other side of the river and exploring the Beaver Islands. That ice had gone bad a month or so ago but with the deep freeze it was riding great. Ended the ride with a bit over 4 hours.
Sunday I started out at Sand Prairie. It was a bit colder than Saturday. The temp didn't bother me but the North wind stung. I ended up stopping to put up my hood and cinch it down.
Not much exposed skin. What was exposed had Dermatone (fancy vaseline) on it.
After SP it was up to the North Loop to get out of the wind. I did a bunch of laps on the .3 spur and Doom's Return. Only to have my Local Legend status taken away by Jim G later in the day. He did 75 some laps on Doom's Return!!! Yeah he and I are nuts.
Everyone is off from school today for President's Day. I too am off. The big girls have gymnastics practice, which is when I plan to ride. Thinking on some river riding again. At least start there and see where I end up. It's currently -25, but little to no wind. Today is our last day of super cold temps. I enjoyed the cold but am ready for some warmth. Mostly I hate all the extra clothing I have to put on and take off.
