Saturday morning I started a fire in the pot belly stove. Got the place hot in a hurry! Close to 10 I headed out on a ride. I've ridden up here before but in the winter. Many of the roads I was on are closed in the winter and become snowmobile trails. It was fun to experience them this way too. Like us they really didn't have any snow but it was evident they had been much colder as all the lakes were frozen.
Ice.
The gravel was firm and fast but a bunch of rolling hills. The ride was 65 miles but flew by. A much needed change of scenery.
The Ride.
Later we headed to Itasca State Park. We checked out the headwaters and did an out and back hike. Best time of year to go! No bugs and no people!
The Headwaters was not frozen all the way. Toby took a swim! Not intentionally.
Saturday night I got all my gear ready to bike home in the morning. Some snow was predicted but the chances weren't very high. I would be traveling through areas that were to get more but by the time I got there the temperatures were to be higher, melting the snow. Well when I got up Sunday morning I saw we got more snow that I thought and the temperature wasn't going to be moving too much.
While not a ton of snow it was enough to make it pretty slippery and obviously a mess. I hadn't ruled out biking. I waited to see what the snow did. I checked the gravel road a couple times and the snow wasn't moving. But did seem to be getting more slippery. With time slipping away I bagged the ride. We did a hike of the property and headed back to Itasca for a solid hike. Again, no people!
I did go through a "whoa is Ben" stage for not riding but got over it. I did toy with getting dropped off in Staples and biking back but my desire to ride was gone, it was dark, and still a mess. It did clear up the closer we got to St. Cloud. Thus I'm heading out this morning for part of the Dirt Bag.
Happy Monday.
